Nigeria

Nigeria was named after its greatest and most important river, the Niger. The similarity to the Latin word “niger” is pure coincidence. The capital of Nigeria is Abuja, the official language is English.

Flag:
Flag
The flag shows three vertical stripes in green, white and green. Green stands for the woods and the agriculture while white should symbolize the unity and peacefulness of the people of Nigeria. The white stripe is also standing for the River Niger who divides the country.
Coat of arms:
The Nigerian national coat of arms was awarded on 28.04.1960 by Queen Elizabeth II. It shows a black shield (symbol of the fertile soil of the country, or an allusion to the word “Nigeria”), on it a silver wave shaft. It symbolizes the union of the rivers Niger and Benue. The red eagle is a symbol of strength, the horses are a sign of dignity.
National Anthem:

The national anthem was adopted in 1978. Previously, on ceremonial occasions, the British anthem played. The music was composed by the head of the Nigeria Police Band, Ben Odiase. The text was developed in a joint work by John A Ilechukwu, Eme Etim Akpan, B A Ogunnaike, Sotu Omoigui and P. O. Aderibigbe.
